Selection rule
Describe the behavior from both sides before selecting the trim.
Commercial hardware function is more important than appearance. Two matching levers can perform very different jobs depending on the lock or exit hardware behind them.
- Should the door latch every time it closes?
- Should the outside be always active, always locked, key-controlled, credential-controlled, or scheduled?
- Should the inside lever always retract the latch for normal egress?
- Does a key unlock the lever, retract the latch for one entry, or remove an interchangeable core?
- Is the visible hardware connected to a cylindrical lock, mortise lock, deadlatch, exit device, electric strike, or another system?
- What should happen when electrical power is removed?
- Does the door have a label or serve a code-sensitive egress function?
- Who uses the opening, and what operability and clearance conditions need review?
What is behind it
The same lever shape can connect to very different hardware.
Cylindrical or bored lock
The main lock chassis passes through a round door preparation, with a latch at the edge. Replacement still requires the function, backset, door thickness, prep, grade or duty needs, and cylinder format to match.
Mortise lock
A larger lock case fits into a pocket in the door edge. The lever, spindle, cylinder, thumbturn, escutcheon or rose, armor front, and lock function are parts of one coordinated assembly.
Narrow-stile deadlatch or deadlock trim
Aluminum storefront doors often use compact lock bodies and trim designed around a narrow stile and specific backset. A paddle, lever, cylinder, and strike must match the exact lock arrangement.
Exit-device trim
Exterior trim connects to the panic or fire exit hardware on the push side. Its lever, pull, thumbpiece, cylinder, or electrified function must be compatible with that device and opening.
Non-latching push/pull trim
A pull or push plate may have no latching function. The door may rely on another lock, roller latch, magnetic lock, closer, or operator, so the whole opening must be identified before changing trim.

A handle symptom does not always mean the handle itself failed.

Operability
A lever can improve operation, but the whole doorway still matters.
The 2010 ADA Standards address operable door hardware, including handles, pulls, latches, locks, and other operable parts. They also address mounting range and operation without tight grasping, pinching, or twisting of the wrist. The standards include additional doorway conditions such as maneuvering clearances, opening force, closing speed, and smooth surfaces.
A product’s shape or marketing description does not by itself establish that an existing opening or completed installation meets every applicable requirement. Review the users, door, hardware function, mounting, clearances, force, closing behavior, current adopted requirements, local amendments, and project authority.

Is a pull handle also a lock?
Usually not by itself. A pull provides a grip. The opening may use a separate deadlock, deadlatch, exit device, magnetic lock, roller latch, or another locking arrangement.
Why does the lever work when I push the door toward the frame?
That points toward latch pressure or alignment involving the door, frame, hinge or pivot side, closer, latch, and strike. Relieving pressure can change the symptom without repairing the cause.
Can the outside handle of a panic bar be changed to a credential reader?
