Hinges or pivots

Closer

It controls the closing cycle. A closer can only manage a door that swings freely; it cannot correct binding caused by the door, the frame, or the hinges.

Lock or latch

Strike and frame

Hollow metal

In a hollow metal door, the skin is not the structure.

A typical hollow metal door is two steel face skins bonded around a lightweight core, completed by top and bottom channels and edge construction. A common core is honeycomb: a bonded lattice that keeps the faces flat and stable. The honeycomb stabilizes the skins, but it is not reinforcement, and it cannot carry hardware loads.

Loads from locks, hinges, closers, and exit devices are carried by reinforcement plates and channels placed inside the door at specific locations during manufacture. Screws driven only into the face skin or the core work loose under daily traffic, which is a frequent root cause when hardware sags, rattles, or pulls away from the door.

When is an opening approved-hardware-only territory?

All-glass commercial doors use tempered glass, and tempered glass cannot be drilled, ground, or notched after tempering; attempting it destroys the leaf. Hardware changes on these doors happen through rails, patch fittings, and header hardware approved for the specific glass system, installed to the manufacturer's instructions, or by replacing the leaf with one fabricated to the required prep.

Automatic doors add a powered operator with sensors, force settings, and timing that belong to a listed assembly.
