SALTO installation and service planned around the door, the power path and the network.

Elwin Security installs, configures, repairs and supports SALTO access control for commercial and multifamily properties in Santa Clara and the San Francisco Bay Area. A SALTO scope can combine XS4 Original+ ANSI escutcheons, XS4 Mini ANSI escutcheons, Neo mortise cylinders, and wired Design XS ANSI wall readers used with CU42xxx or BLUEnet door controllers. A gateway or IQ then links the wireless locks to the SALTO platform.

For properties that chose SALTO and need the doors, power and network to match.

SALTO's product pages list XS4 Original+ ANSI and XS4 Mini ANSI escutcheons and a Design XS ANSI wall reader, so the door type decides the hardware and the wiring.

01

Lever doors that will run on batteries

SALTO states the XS4 Original+ ANSI is designed to fit most ANSI profile doors with mortise, cylindrical and tubular locks. It covers door thicknesses from 1-3/8 in. to 4-3/4 in., was tested with LR6 batteries per SALTO's guide, and incorporates BLUEnet wireless and mobile credentials technology.

02

Doors that keep their mortise lock or deadbolt

The SALTO Neo mortise cylinder is made for doors whose mortise lock takes a mortise cylinder.

03

Wired entries on a controller

The Design XS ANSI wall reader fits ANSI standard electric boxes and connects to a CU42xxx controller or a BLUEnet door controller with four wires. SALTO recommends one cable per wall reader.

SALTO work splits into hardware at the door, the platform behind it, and service after handoff.

Elwin scopes the three parts separately so the proposal shows what goes on the door, what connects it, and what the property team manages afterward.

01

Hardware installation

Escutcheons, cylinders and wall readers each carry their own door requirements. SALTO's XS4 Mini ANSI product page says it is designed to meet ANSI A156.2 Grade 1 or 2 cylindrical latch requirements and covers door thicknesses from 1-9/16 in. to 4-1/8 in.

02

Platform setup

SALTO Space is SALTO's on-premise platform, designed for LAN environments only. SALTO KS is a cloud-based access control as a service platform that needs one or more IQ units per site. Homelok is SALTO's solution for the residential, multifamily and smart-living business.

03

Repair, batteries and support

SALTO's XS4 Original+ ANSI guide says the escutcheon was tested with LR6 batteries, so the service plan lists the battery type. Elwin repairs, replaces and supports SALTO hardware after the original installation.

What Elwin checks before scoping a SALTO project.

The site walk confirms the lock in each door, power and cable for wired readers, the network for the gateway or IQ, and radio reach to wireless locks.

01

Door and lock type

Mortise, cylindrical or tubular lock; door thickness against the 1-3/8 in. to 4-3/4 in. range of the XS4 Original+ ANSI or the 1-9/16 in. to 4-1/8 in. range of the XS4 Mini ANSI; handing; and any existing override cylinder. Hardware on fire-rated doors and doors with exit devices is repaired and supported by Elwin; your fire marshal or AHJ determines compliance.

02

Power for controllers and gateways

SALTO's CU4000 guide says the unit shall be supplied by a UL294 listed external power supply with built-in secondary battery, with Class 2 output rated 12 VDC, minimum 2 A. The SALTO Gateway can be powered by PoE, and the IQ3 comes in an Ethernet plus PoE model. SALTO's IQ3 guide says to use an auxiliary power supply where there is no PoE infrastructure.

03

Cable paths and distances

SALTO's CU4000 guide says the LAN connect cable shall locate in the same room and is not permitted to be greater than 98.5 ft (30 m) long.

04

Network and radio reach

Space stays on the LAN; a KS IQ2 supports DHCP and static IP configuration, with outbound access on SALTO's listed ports. SALTO's guides list a 10 to 15 m indoor radio range for gateways, nodes and repeaters, and a recommended connectivity distance of 10 m to 15 m for the IQ3 Mini. The walk maps which locks a gateway can reach.

A SALTO system has four layers: door hardware, wired readers and controllers, gateways, and platforms.

SALTO publishes an installation guide or product page for each layer, and the scope for a property is built from those documents.

Locks on the door

XS4 Original+ ANSI escutcheons: SALTO's guide lists A156.25 grade 1 and IP55 only with the SALTO LA1T mortise lock, and its product page lists a compatible override mortise cylinder length of 1-1/8 in. XS4 Mini ANSI escutcheons for cylindrical latches. Neo mortise cylinders for doors whose mortise lock takes a mortise cylinder.

Wired readers and controllers

SALTO's wall reader installation guide lists 150 mA for a reader and 250 mA for a reader with keyboard, and says the installer must account for this when sizing the CU42xx power supply. The CU4000 door controller takes 12 V DC at 2 A maximum and switches relays rated 2 A at 30 V DC; only the CU42E0 model has an Ethernet connection. The BLUEnet door controller is a compact DIN rail unit with a 10 to 30 V input, a 700 mA maximum current consumption and a rated resistive load of 1 A at 30 V DC.

Gateways, nodes and repeaters

The SALTO Gateway runs on PoE (IEEE 802.3af, Class 2, 5 W) or a 12 V supply, with up to 6 external nodes and up to 112 RFnet locks at 16 per node. The IQ3 comes in Ethernet, Ethernet plus PoE and Ethernet plus Wi-Fi models; the IQ3 Mini runs on a 5 W wall adapter and connects up to 4 access points. Indoor radio range is 10 to 15 m, and SALTO notes that metal and concrete walls have a direct impact on it.

Software and handoff

SALTO Space runs on Windows 11 or Server 2016 or higher with SQL Server 2016 or higher, on the LAN only. SALTO KS sites need one or more IQ units, and SALTO's IQ network requirements list outgoing connections on ports 40000, 40001, 80, 443, 21 and 49152 to 65535, plus a reachable DNS server on port 53. Homelok combines cloud-based and SVN access technology for residential and multifamily buildings.

SALTO installation starts with the doors, not the software.

Elwin confirms the hardware for each opening and the power and network for the connecting devices before the platform is configured.

01

Walk and document each door

Record the lock type, door thickness, handing and frame condition. Note the nearest power, electric box and network drop for any wall reader, controller, gateway or IQ.

Result: The hardware list matches the doors.

02

Plan power, cable and radio

Size the controller power supply from SALTO's published reader draw figures. Place gateways, nodes and repeaters within the 10 to 15 m radio range of each wireless lock, with no more than three repeaters in a row.

Result: The connecting layer is specified before install day.

03

Install, configure and hand off

Install locks, readers, controllers and gateways; configure Space, KS or Homelok; test each door; and hand the property team the user, credential and battery routine.

Result: The property gets a working SALTO system with a support path.

SALTO publishes its hardware limits down to the milliamp, and the scope should use those numbers.

SALTO publishes installation guides for the CU4000 controller, the XS4 Original+ ANSI escutcheon and the SALTO Gateway.

SALTO's wall readers are only for use with SALTO control units, and SALTO recommends one cable per reader.

Indoor radio range for gateways, nodes and repeaters is 10 to 15 m. Metal and concrete walls have a direct impact on it.

FAQ

Yes. Elwin Security installs, configures, repairs and supports SALTO access control for commercial and multifamily properties in Santa Clara and the Bay Area. The work starts with a site walk of the doors.

Start with the property conditions.

Tell Elwin what is not working, what systems are already on site, and which access points matter most. The next step is a scope grounded in the building, not a generic product list.
