TekTone intercom repair and replacement for Bay Area properties.
Elwin Security repairs and replaces TekTone Tek-ENTRY apartment entry systems at Bay Area multifamily and commercial properties. That covers AM-series and CM-series entrance panels, IR-series apartment stations, the PK543A amplifier and door release hardware. The work includes the #22 AWG riser wiring between them and the amplifier settings that decide how the door releases.
For properties where a Tek-ENTRY panel has stopped doing its job.
Each of the three situations below has a different fix.
01
The whole system is dead
TekTone's PK543A manual starts a dead-system check at the transformer: 16 VAC at the secondary and 120 VAC at the primary. If the amplifier's power LED is lit, the manual moves to the field wiring and a direct test with one apartment station. TekTone's troubleshooting document says a failure affecting the entire system can come from trunk cable damage close to the amplifier or inside it.
02
One apartment cannot talk, listen or release the door
TekTone's TekTip treats a failure in one apartment or a small group of apartments as a local problem in that area's wiring or station. Its test is to swap the station with one from a working apartment: if it works there, the wiring is suspect; if it does not, the station is. IR-series stations carry individually replaceable push buttons with self-wiping contacts.
03
The property has outgrown the panel or wants video
A CM491 comes with 4, 8, 12, 16 or 20 buttons, and an AM492 holds up to 18 before it needs an AM490/12 or AM490/22 add-on panel.
Service focus
Repair, rewire or replace: the amplifier, the stations and the cable decide.
The first job is to identify the panel, the station type and the amplifier settings.
01
Repair with TekTone parts
TekTone's PK543A spec sheet lists the amplifier as a self-contained unit for 3-, 4- or 5-wire stations, powered at 16 VAC, 10 VA. The sheet lists AC, DC or maglock door release, and the manual includes a PK543 Compatible mode for PK543 drop-in replacement. TekTone recommends cleaning and lubricating switches at 6 months to a year under normal conditions, or 3 to 6 months under abnormal conditions.
02
Rewire or correct the installation
TekTone's PK543A manual says cable wiring must be 2 conductor #18 AWG, up to 80 feet, or up to 200 feet with #14 AWG. The transformer run is 80 feet of #18 AWG, or 200 feet with #14 AWG, with the amplifier at least 3 feet from the transformer. TekTone's buzzing TekTip blames a slight buzz at the station on cable of about 100 pF per foot; its fix is a 1N4003 diode in series with each X terminal.
03
Replace the system
TekTone's terms of sale, Rev. 26 dated July 23, 2026, state that its limited warranty covers bench repairs only and that TekTone will not be responsible for costs involving on-site service calls.
Service check
What Elwin checks before quoting a TekTone repair or replacement.
A model on the faceplate is not enough. The station wire count, the amplifier settings and the release hardware decide which TekTone parts will work.
01
Panel and station models
Which AM or CM panel is installed, which IR stations, and whether they are 3-, 4- or 5-wire.
02
Amplifier, settings and transformer
PK543 or PK543A, and the dip switch and shunt positions. TekTone requires the SS106 and its 8-volt tap for 24 VAC strikes and 12 VDC maglocks. It rates the PK543A for 0 to 30°C and places it inside an OH190 housing, or outside an OF190S surface frame with shielded speaker cable.
03
Release path
Doorstrike or maglock, which sets the JP5, J1 and J2 shunts. Where the release is a maglock or sits on a fire-rated door, your fire marshal or AHJ determines compliance.
Scope details
A Tek-ENTRY system includes entrance panels, apartment stations, an amplifier and riser wiring.
The panel is what visitors see. The stations, the amplifier settings and the riser cable are what a repair touches.
Entrance panels
TekTone's AM612 and AM642 panels are anodized aluminum with a weather-resistant Mylar speaker; the AM642 protects the speaker with a louvered panel and perforated aluminum. The CM491 includes an integral directory, the CM492 is modular with an AM190D directory panel, and both take aluminum push-button actuators engraved with up to four letters or digits. Flush panels need a TekTone OH600, OH601, OH190-series or OH191 housing; surface panels take an S suffix or an OF190S or OF291S frame.

Apartment stations
TekTone's manual lets 3-, 4- and 5-wire stations mix on one amplifier, except the IR102C, which works only with other IR102B or C devices.

Amplifier, power and release
PK543A door times are 2, 10 or 25 seconds; maximum maglock current is 500 mA at 12 VDC or 250 mA at 24 VDC. Your fire marshal or AHJ determines compliance.

Second entrances and accessories
TekTone's PK502B transfers voice and door release to whichever entrance placed the call; the count needed is one less than the number of entrances, and each sits within 3 feet of the amplifier. The LI404B strobe runs on 24 VDC at 57 mA, flashes for approximately 15 to 20 seconds on an incoming call, and is not a weatherproof device.

Process
From a dead panel to a working entry, with the right TekTone parts.
Repair decisions follow TekTone's published wiring and settings.
01
Identify the system
If the power LED is not lit, check 16 VAC at the transformer secondary; if lit, run a direct test with one apartment station.
Result: The quote names the exact TekTone part or wiring fix, not a generic intercom repair.
02
Choose repair, rewire or replacement
Match the failure to TekTone's documents: a replacement push-button, a PK543A in PK543 Compatible mode, or a PK502B for multiple entrances.
Result: The property knows what the fix costs and what it leaves in place.
03
Install, set and hand off
Set the door time, postal timer and release shunts for the door hardware. Then follow TekTone's test steps: push each entrance button to confirm it calls the right suite, and test talk, listen and door at each station.
Result: The entry works and the property team knows how to keep the push buttons clean.
Field proof
What TekTone's own documents say about repair.
The photos below show intercom entries. The brass panel in the first photo carries no brand visible in the frame.
Its IL094 brochure, Rev. 14 dated 1/2026, shows the AM492/08, AM490/22, CM491/016, CM492/024, AM190D, AM642/08, AM642/14 and AM612/08 panels, the IR10xE, IR20xE and IR207B stations and the LI404B strobe.
TekTone's Terms and Conditions of Sale, Rev. 26 dated July 23, 2026, give a one-year limited warranty from date of delivery. They state that the warranty covers bench repairs only and that TekTone will not be responsible for costs involving on-site service calls. TekTone's warranty page directs anyone who is not a direct TekTone customer to the company the system was purchased from.
The same terms say TekTone makes no official statement about the longevity of its products. TekTone's home page states it has not obsoleted any system without a path for upgrade or replacement. Its PK543A manual, Rev. 7 dated 11/2016, keeps a PK543 Compatible mode for drop-in replacement of the PK543.

Yes. TekTone's IL094 Tek-ENTRY brochure, revision 14 dated 1/2026, lists the AM and CM panels and IR stations. TekTone's terms of sale say its warranty covers bench repairs only and that TekTone is not responsible for on-site service call costs, so Elwin repairs the system at the property with TekTone parts.
TekTone's terms of sale make no official statement about product longevity. Elwin identifies the exact panel, stations and amplifier on site before quoting parts.
TekTone's TekTip attributes a slight buzz at the apartment station to leakage in the selective wires when low-grade cable of approximately 100 pF per foot is used. For systems already wired, TekTone's fix is a Type 1N4003 diode in series with each X terminal at the station; it recommends cable of approximately 40 to 45 pF per foot. TekTone's PK543A manual ties excessive hum to wiring run too close to electrical wiring, an amplifier too close to a transformer, missing twisted pair, or voice volume set too high.
Yes. TekTone's PK543A manual includes a PK543 Compatible mode for drop-in replacement of a PK543: SW4 off, SW5 on, SW6 on and SW7 on, with the JP5 shunt removed, J2 set to 1-2 and J1 set to 2-3. Elwin configures the PK543A for the installed door hardware and stations and tests each entrance button and station before handoff.
Yes. Elwin replaces Tek-ENTRY panels and stations with video intercoms. The next step is a service call to identify the panel, stations and amplifier, or a site walk if replacement is already on the table.
