Linear intercom repair and replacement for Bay Area properties.

Elwin Security repairs and replaces Linear telephone entry systems at Bay Area multifamily and commercial properties. That covers the AE-100, AE-500, AE1000Plus and AE2000Plus panels and the EntryPro EP-402 and EP-436. The work includes relays, door and gate release wiring, modems, network kits, directories and programming, and the telephone line the panel calls through.

For properties where a Linear panel has stopped doing its job.

Each of the three situations below has a different fix.

01

The panel needs a telephone line

Linear's AE-100 manual states that a dedicated telephone line is required, and its AE-500, AE1000Plus and AE2000Plus manuals provide a modular connector for telephone line connection to the unit's built-in modem. Linear's EP-Series installation instructions say the unit connects two wire POTs for telephone entry applications, and its EP-436 product page lists the unit as "Compatible with most 3rd party VoIP adapters."

02

Calls, the directory or the release have failed

Its accessories page lists the CCM-1A, CCM-2A and CCM-RE1 color cameras and the AM-SEK network kit. Elwin tests the relay, the release wiring and the telephone line before any part is ordered.

03

The property has outgrown the panel

Linear's one-door commercial telephone entry system page (order number ACP00937) accepts a total of 125 directory listings or stand-alone entry codes, and its AE-500 manual lists up to 250 residents with directory numbers for telephone entry. Linear's AE1000Plus literature lists up to 10,000 telephone directory codes for cardholders with AccessBase2000 programming and up to 2,000 telephone directory codes with AXNET programming. When the resident count goes past what the installed model supports, or the property wants a video intercom instead of a voice panel, the fix is replacement.

Repair, reconnect, or replace: the model and the programming method decide.

Linear's own documents set what each path requires, so the first job is to identify the exact panel, its programming method, and how it connects.

01

Repair with Linear replacement parts

The AE-100 manual says the system charges the backup battery and its cabinet holds a 1.2 amp/hour sealed lead-acid gel cell battery (P/N 100104), while the AE-500 and AE1000Plus manuals say an external battery charger will be required to maintain the battery. Elwin repairs with the part that matches the installed model.

02

Reconnect or re-program

Linear's AM-SEK kit (ACP00964) provides a standard network TCP/IP connection for Linear's AM3Plus, AE1000Plus, and AE2000Plus access controllers, and Linear's software downloads page lists the AXNET PC Utility Software (Backup/Restore, Event Log, Firmware Uploader). Linear's AE1000Plus manual states that a unit programmed with one method loses all programming data if it is switched to the other. Elwin records the current mode and backs up the directory before changing the connection or the programming path.

03

Replace the system

Linear's EntryPro datasheet lists 2 doors on board, expandable to 36 or 64 doors with a license key upgrade, and its EP-436 product page lists 36 doors with 72 readers, expandable to 64 doors and 128 readers. When the property wants a video intercom instead of a voice panel, Elwin replaces the Linear panel with a video intercom and reuses the release wiring where it tests sound.

What Elwin checks before quoting a Linear repair or replacement.

A model name on the faceplate is not enough. The programming mode, the connection type and the relay wiring decide which Linear parts and software will work.

01

Model and programming mode

Faceplate model (AE-100, AE-500, AE1000Plus, AE2000Plus, EP-402 or EP-436) and, for the AE1000Plus, whether the display shows "An" for AXNET or "Ab" for AccessBase2000 at power-up. Linear's AE1000Plus manual sets AccessBase2000 as the default mode.

02

Connection type

Linear's AE1000Plus manual states that AccessBase2000 does not support unit-to-unit network communications through modems, only RS-485 cable.

03

Release path

Which relay drives which door or gate, whether a remote keypad or Wiegand reader is attached, and whether a gate operator or MGT safety-edge transmitter reports to the panel.

04

Directory and power

Resident count against the model's capacity, who programs the system today, and whether the backup battery has the external charger that Linear's AE-500 and AE1000Plus manuals require.

A Linear scope has four parts, and the panel is only one of them.

The faceplate is what residents see. The relays, the line, the programming and the network are what a repair touches.

Panel electronics

Linear rates the AE-100 access relay at 10 amps AC and 7 amps DC at 30 volts, and the two AE-500 relays at 3 amps at 30 volts. Each of the four AE1000Plus relays is rated at 3 amps. The AE1000Plus and AE2000Plus carry a built-in 33.6K baud modem; the AE-500 carries a 14.4K baud modem.

Telephone line

Linear's manuals route telephone wiring in its own conduit at least six inches from AC wiring, on the building side of the phone company's demarcation device. Linear's manuals say all telephone wire should be twisted-pair with a minimum size of 24 AWG. Linear's AE1000Plus manual says that if a security or personal alert system is connected to the telephone line, it should be connected to the line ahead of the AE1000Plus using an RJ-31X or RJ-38X interface.

Release hardware

Each AE1000Plus relay channel has a request-to-exit input, and the unit lists four normally closed door sense inputs; the AE-500 lists two exit request inputs and one sensing input. Where a Linear relay releases a maglock or an exit door, Elwin services that door hardware. Your fire marshal or AHJ determines compliance.

Programming and handoff

Linear's AE1000Plus manual says AXNET software is built into each unit and is reached through browser software from any PC, with each unit's database stored in the unit's memory, while AccessBase2000 software installs in one dedicated PC. The AE-100 is programmed from its keypad or by touch-tone telephone. The AE-500's built-in programming interface can be accessed on-site using a separate telephone line, or off-site using a computer with a modem and Internet Explorer browser with Sun Java installed.

From a dead panel to a working entry, with the right Linear parts.

The process ties repair decisions to Linear's published compatibility listings.

01

Identify the panel

Record the model, programming mode, connection type, relay wiring and backup battery, and test calls, keypad, display and release at the panel.

Result: The quote names the exact Linear part or software, not a generic intercom repair.

02

Choose repair, reconnect or replacement

Match the failure to Linear's parts and software pages: a replacement modem or camera, an AM-SEK network kit, a programming restore, an EntryPro EP-436, or a video intercom.

Result: The property knows what the fix costs and what it leaves in place.

03

Install, program and hand off

Install the part or system, load the directory, test each relay and call path, and show the property team how programming works going forward.

Result: The entry works and the property can manage its own directory.

What Linear's own documents say about repair.

The points below come from Linear's own documents.

Linear's manuals page lists a "Discontinued Installation Manual" for the AM3Plus.

Linear's site hosts installation instructions for the AE-500, AE1000Plus and AE2000Plus.

Linear's May 2023 security bulletin for the EP-402, EP-436 and EP-736 recommends a segmented network with no direct public internet connection. Linear's May 12, 2023 bulletin says Linear can provide a firmware recovery kit at no cost if you believe your system has been compromised.

The cited AE-100 manual lists a twenty-four (24) month warranty against defects in material and workmanship that extends only to wholesale customers who buy direct from Linear or through Linear's normal distribution channels, and says Linear does not warrant the product to consumers. The cited EntryPro EP-402 and EP-436 datasheet (Rev E) lists a warranty of 2 Years Hardware and Software.
